Vets start with a flourish

Hat-trick for Barrett as vets run riot
Scole United Veterans started the new season at Dickleburgh and welcomed newly promoted Mattishall Wanderers for the first game of the season. New signings included Forster in goal and Skipper up front. Despite injuries, Scole were able to field a strong side, but the visitors started with only 10. After a slow start, Scole settled when striker Skipper lobbed the visitors keeper. This opened the flood gates, with further goals from Bartram, Hughes and Midwinter. The visitors forced Forster into one save, but did not really threaten. Even with and eleventh man arriving, both Skipper and Bartram doubled their goal tally for the match. Sadly, Skipper’s debut ended just before half-time, with a ruptured Achilles’ tendon. With Ruddock injured in the friendly, Barrett came on to replace him.
The second half saw Scole continuing to dominate, but chances were wasted. In the late summer sun, energy levels dropped and the visitors saw more of the ball. Barrett missed several chance before finally adding a seventh, and shortly after completed a second half hat-trick. At the death, Manning conceded a free kick, from which the visitors scored a consolation goal.
The news is that Mike Skipper has a complete rupture of his Achilles Tendon and will be out of action for year. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him supporting us later in the season.
