Scole Vets win top of the table clash
Manning's goal enough to see off Unthank Arms
Scole veterans welcomed second placed Unthank Arms to Ransome Avenue, looking to build on last week's win. Without the injured Lincoln and with Goreham still away, a slight reshuffle in personnel allowed Scole to keep to the 3-5-2 formation that they played successfully last week. Brian Midwinter returned to the defence with Simon Bartram moving to a forward role. Paul Chenery came on to the bench for his first league appearance.
A tight match ensued, as expected, with both sides working hard but cancelling each other out. The wing backs had to defend more than last week, but the back three were solid throughout. The visitors were limited to just one chance in the first period, hitting the bar from a half cleared corner, but keeper Bartram had it well covered. Powell almost scored directly from a corner, before another half cleared corner saw the game's only goal. Unthank arms failed to clear their lines, and Manning chipped in wth a rare goal, curling in the far post form 18 yards. Just before half time, the hosts lost Ruddock to a Hamstring injury, so Chenery made his first appearance in the league.
After the break, the match continued in a similar vein, but with the visitors pushing further forward. Despite this, the back three coped admirably, Hughes winning most of the aerial battles, though a free-headed chance did go to waste. Scole were then forced into a further chance when Manning suffered the dame fate as Ruddock in the first half.
Simon Bartram and Partridge then lead the line, trying to stop the long balls forward. But despite late pressure, Scole stood firm and took all three points. Keeper Bartram's third consecutive clean sheet and a stand out performance from a rejuvenated Hughes.
