'1st Team halt losing run with a battling draw away at Beccles...'

Beccles Town Fc 1 v 1 Scole United Fc

Another busy week for the club following the departures of another couple of members of the 1st team squad, the nasty injury to midfieder Ben Norton-Hugman and unavailability of winger Joe Hooton meant that the very last thing caretaker manager Alan Boulter needed was a couple of saturday morning call offs. Inevitably then this is what Scole had to contend with. An amazing 7 starters from the week before were absent from the squad bolstered by the signings of local well known experienced senior players Tom Dade and Kev Riches. Stepping up from the reserves were Zac Turner, George Reeder and Harry Browne and veteran Nigel Manning volunteered to take the final place on the bench to make up a full complement. Adam Solley returned from suspension and Jordan Balls retook the Captains armband.
So a big change in personnel called for a change in formation and attitude. Scole needed to become hard to beat and adopt a more workmanlike attitude and they took this new outlook out onto the pitch. The whole squad put in a tremendously hardworking performance and with it lifted the gloom that had been hanging over the squad. It was tireless runner Kieran Manning who opened the scoring in the match. He was a thorn in the side of the Beccles defence all day and when he latched onto a sublime Zac Turner through ball outrunning his marker he finished past the keeper to send the away support into raptures. Scole looked dangerous from every set piece and midfielder Jimmy Dunkinson had a header well saved and Turner a half volley cleared off the line as somehow Beccles survived. That being said keeper Kai Hewiit himself had to be at his very best to maintain Scole's lead as Beccles had a couple of good chances.
Half-time came and went and Scole began to tire. They were still creating problems for Beccles though and both Manning and Kev Riches could have finished the game off for Scole. At the other end Scole were defending heroically with lots of blocks and tackles and Hewitt again pulling off a string of outstanding saves. The equaliser was harsh when it came though when Scole were defending an attack from their right handside. Hewitt made a save and the rebound effort was blocked and cleared by George Reeder only to ricochet off fellow defender Lee Tricker's shin past the helpless Hewitt. With Scole's hearts broken they could have gone on to lose this game but a new found collective spirit meant they dug in and stopped their losing run to come away with a more than deserved point.
Excellent 1st team debuts from Tom Dade, Kev Riches & George Reeder and top performances all over the pitch but Man of the Match is undoubtedly goalkeeper Kai Hewitt.

Next week is a tough away fixture against league leaders Caister 14:30 kick off.
