'Scole fall at home to Champions Elect Wymondham Town...'
By Alan Boulter
Scole United Fc 0 v 2 Wymondham Town Fc
Scole faced a big task this week as they welcomed league leaders and champions elect Wymondham Town to Ransome Avenue. They also faced the prospect of having both their goalkeepers (Buckmaster & Hewitt) unavailable so Sam Macdowall
stepped in to help the Yellows out. Also worth noting that new signing 16 yr old Josh Lucraft
took a place on the Scole bench looking to make his debut.
Scole started the game quite well and once again were tactically disciplined and more than matched their opponents in the opening 20 minutes or so. However, Wymondham are a formidable side with many experienced senior players among their ranks. And this was soon apparent in their game management. By this I mean the subtle and sometimes not so subtle efforts to influence the referee and harangue the linesman. They began to get to grips with Scole's tactics and gain positional advantage. Scole were holding their own though and as half-time approached Wymondham began to lose discipline and get frustrated. Sadly for the home side though right on half-time Wymondham got the opener when an attack on Scole's right led to a scruffy goal which was hard on goalkeeper Macdowall who had made a couple of very good saves during the 1st half.
Despite being a goal down Scole were not disheartened and came out for the 2nd half full of belief. Young Lucraft came on for his debut and mnanager Jon Abbott changed formation to chase down the equaliser. However it was Wymondham who got the next goal. 10 minutes from the end and then once again Macdowall pulled off a terrific double save and Wymondham closed the game down.
A tough game for the young and fairly inexperienced Scole side who in all honesty had good possession but rarely threatened the Wymondham goal. A game that I am sure these youngsters will learn from and that showed Scole are not a million miles away from the top side in the division and if they can regain their belief they still have a massive chance of joining their opponents in promotion at the end of the season.
Massive thanks to stand in goalie Sam Macdowall
who performed heroically.
Next weeks game is a home game v Yelverton. 2.30 Kick Off.
